It’s mid-fall at the movies- that time of year when the odds are high for three types of releases: horror movies (‘Saw’, please stop), potential award contenders, and the possibility of small movies that could go either way but turn out to be nice surprises before the much more covered holiday season kicks off.
This weekend’s slate doesn’t have a horror movie, but it might have two of the other three. The potential award bait is ‘Secretariat‘, and there’s a Katherine Heigl romantic comedy (with a baby!) called ‘Life as We Know It‘. The possible surprise/underdog is ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story‘, and it’s also what’s playing in our Weekend Focus for Friday October 8th:
Genre: Comedy, drama
This one has at least some buzz, a unique title, and rising star Zach Galifianakis. All that doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to be good.
A Brooklyn teenager checks himself into a mental hospital, only to find the youth ward closed. In the adult wing, he meets a mentor of sorts (Galifianakis), and of course a girl.
The specs on the movie look great, but plot could be too sappy or tame in the wrong hands. The trailer makes it look wildly unpredictable: on screen it could end up being as flat as ‘28 Days‘ (Sandra Bullock and pre-’Lord of the Rings’ Viggo Mortensen), or something much quirkier and more interesting, like ‘Stranger Than Fiction‘.
